Remembering Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes
Lisa Nicole Lopes (May 27, 1971 – April 25, 2002)
Lisa was prolific in her short career, releasing three platinum-selling albums and winning countless awards.
But the road to stardom was anything but smooth for the young Philadelphia-bred Lisa Nicole Lopes, who faced an abusive father, bankruptcy, alcoholism and prison time for committing arson. And yet she went on to become a vital member of the group who released groundbreaking tracks such as Waterfalls, No Scrubs and Unpretty.
A documentary on the final twenty-six days of Lopes’s life, titled The Last Days of Left Eye shows Lopes’ shows diary entries while on a 30-day spiritual retreat in Honduras. The film shows a car accident in which Lopes and her assistant were involved, that killed a ten-year-old boy called Bayron Lopez.
Lisa commented that she felt a “spirit” following her and thought that the spirit may have made a mistake by taking his life instead of hers. Lisa paid for Lopez’ funeral and days later, whilst still in Honduras, she also died in a car accident.
